What Blade Did Wesley Snipes Blind Himself With?

I do not understand how on earth Wesley Snipes thought that he would get away with evading to pay nearly 12 million dollars in taxes what in the heck bit him? Now facing up to 20 years in prison...Doesn't make any sense!
